Elchin Asadov took the first international victory of his career, winning the seventh stage of the Tour of Morocco. Continuing the good performance of the Synergy Baku Cycling Project in the north African race, Josip Rumac finished third and retained his King of the Mountains jersey, and Kirill Pozdnyakov successfully defended his third place in GC.
On the 184.5 km from Guercif to Fez, Asadov was in the break group of the day and won the closing sprint.
“It was a very long day and we told Elchin to try be active today. At the beginning of the race, he was in the first breakaway of 10 riders but the leading team didn’t like this group and brought them back,” said DS Eldar Dzhabrailov. “Then Elchin took off with two other riders and they stayed away, with a gap of more than seven minutes.”
“The last three km were very difficult for him, as there was only one other rider with him by then, and he didn’t want to work. So Elchin had to do all the work and then did a great job in the sprint.”
“I am very happy with this win. I came to this race with the goal of winning a stage,” Elchin said. “Thanks so much to the team for their trust and support.”
“He did a great job and we are all very happy for him,” Eldar added. “He deserved it.” Elchin has previously won multiple national titles in Azerbaijan, but this is his first win in an international race.
