The Synergy Baku Cycling Project has released Max Averin from his contract. The UCI, the international cycling federation, announced Wednesday that he had been given a 15-month ban for violating the anti-doping rules.

The Azerbaijan Cycling Federation withdrew Averin’s licence, in accordance with the UCI regulations.

Averin tested positive on December 23, 2016, for meldonium. His provisional suspension was announced in April, after he returned a non-negative test at the Istrian Spring Trophy in March. He will be eligible to return to racing as of March 22, 2018.
