Kirill Pozdnyakov soared to the top in the Tour d’Azerbaidjan, winning the second stage to take over the race lead. The Synergy Baku Cycling Project rider took off from the break group with about 20km to go and soloed in to Ismayilli for the win.

On a difficult stage with bad weather, Kirill and Josip Rumac made it into the break group of the day. Both picked up mountain points along the way,and Josip won one of the intermediate sprints. The group changed in size as it went through the day’s many climbs.

On the final descent, with around 20 kilometers left, Kirill attacked out of the group, which by this time held 12 riders. Despite the heavy rain and at times hail, the Azeri rider hung on to enough of a lead to take the win, arriving at the finish line 39 seconds ahead of his nearest chaser.

Kirill now leads the race by 39 seconds.

“We had great day today with all the team,” Kirill said. “It was a nervous stage but we made it and it’s great to win in the home race for our sponsors and people who support us from Azerbaijan! A perfect day for me and now three tricky stages are coming up, where we would need to ride smart. But I have confidence in my teammates so we are just going to do our best to bring this jersey home.”

“A really hard stage! Wind, flat, climb — all together it was a bingo and today it was bingo for us!”, said DS Eldar Dzhabrailov. “I am happy for this victory,  happy for the whole team.

“We have worked hard for this, and we continue to do our great job. Kirill and Josip did a great job, and the other guys controlled the group with the dangerous riders – so its great job. This victory is  the work of the whole team!”
