Kirill Pozdnyakov is the first Azeri rider to win the Tour d’Azerbaidjan. It is also the first title for the Synergy Baku Cycling Project.

He also won the mountain jersey and the Best Azeri rider award.

Kirill moved into the lead of the race on the second stage, a mountainous course from Baku to Ismayilli. He and the team worked hard on the remaining stages to protect his lead, which expanded from 39 seconds to 46 seconds at the race’s end.

Sunday’s final stage, with start and finish in Baku, ran 158 km and finished with several laps of a circuit course in the Baku Old Town, with each lap containing a Cat. 3 climb. The stage was won by a solo break rider, and Kirill finished with the pack, 21 seconds down.

“This is a dream come true to win the home race!” Kirill said. “I did a lot of work for this and looked forward to the win, but it’s not always dependent on your physical condition, but also on the support of your team and luck.

“We had all of these at this race and the team did fantastic work. This is how the victory came! Thanks a lot to everyone for the support.”

“Finally, after a nervous six months of preparation, I can say that we have won the Tour d’Azerbaidjan for the first time,” said DS Eldar Dzhabrailov. “I still cannot believe this, for me it is like a dream. I am very happy for my guys, they did all the very good and hard work, especially today. They kept the entire race under control, without panic, and with confidence in Kirill’s victory.

“I am also grateful to the entire team staff, because without their help it would be impossible.

“I also want to especially thank Kirill for this win. It was beautiful and confident, without mistakes and fear. I am very glad that together we came to this great victory!”
